Potential Influx of Call of Duty Titles to Xbox Game Pass
Exciting Developments on the Horizon
Recent indications suggest that several Call of Duty titles may soon be available on Xbox Game Pass, primarily for PC users.
Major Acquisition and Its Aftermath
In January 2023,Microsoft unveiled its enterprising plan to acquire Activision Blizzard King for a staggering $69 billion, marking it as the most notable acquisition in the gaming sector to date. Following nearly a year filled with legal challenges and global hearings, Microsoft successfully completed the acquisition in October 2023.A year post-acquisition, an array of Activision games has made its way onto Game Pass, including popular titles like the latest installment of Call of Duty, Diablo IV, and Crash Bandicoot.
The Missing Classics: Older Call of Duty Games
Despite this influx of new content, many classic Call of Duty games remain absent from Game Pass. However, recent developments hint at a possible change. On December 9th—an observation made by Twitter user Knoebel—Activision discreetly listed PC versions of several iconic titles: Call of Duty,Call of Duty: United Offensive,Call of Duty 2,and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on the Microsoft Store. Notably, these entries bear a release date indicating December 9th, 2024.
Strategic Moves by Microsoft
At present, there is no support for linking steam accounts with Game Pass; thus it truly seems logical for Microsoft to incorporate these classic shooters into its own digital storefront if they aim to include them in future offerings for PC Game Pass subscribers.
Originally launched in 2003 alongside its expansion pack United Offensive—both never making their way onto consoles—it appears unlikely that these older titles will transition to Xbox without external development assistance from another studio. Conversely,Modern Warfare, which debuted in 2007 and was available on xbox 360 while also being backward compatible with both Xbox One and Series X/S consoles could potentially find its way into both console versions as well as PC Game Pass.
Looking Ahead: What’s Next?
It’s plausible that these recent additions are part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to enhance their platform’s library with legacy content. As we await further announcements—potentially during this week’s upcoming Game Awards—the gaming community remains eager for updates regarding these beloved franchises’ availability on Xbox platforms.Only time will reveal what Phil Spencer and Geoff Keighley have planned!
