Revisiting God of War: Ragnarök on PC
After dedicating a few hours to the PC version of God of War: Ragnarök, I anticipated an opportunity to reevaluate a game I initially rushed through, eager to uncover its narrative twists. Regrettably, my experience with Kratos and Atreus’ latest journey on my gaming rig has left me longing for the smoother gameplay offered by my PS5. This sentiment isn’t merely due to the PlayStation Network’s sign-in requirement.
Technical Hurdles in Transitioning Platforms
God of War: Ragnarök marks yet another PlayStation title that has transitioned from console excellence to a new platform, albeit with some technical shortcomings. While it doesn’t quite reach the level of issues seen with The Last of Us Part I last year, I’ve encountered persistent slowdowns that were absent during my console playthrough. A quick search revealed that I’m not alone in facing these performance challenges; many players report similar framerate drops without any clear solution.
Some users have found temporary relief by disconnecting Bluetooth devices, but as someone who doesn’t use any such peripherals, my only respite came from exiting and re-entering the game entirely. Initially, gameplay would feel fluid upon returning; however, it wouldn’t take long before Kratos’ combat animations became choppy again. The experience quickly devolved into a frustrating cycle where moments of exhilarating action are overshadowed by significant performance dips—making precise combat nearly impossible.
A Mixed Bag of Nostalgia and Frustration
It’s disheartening because despite feeling that Ragnarök is somewhat overstuffed—perhaps deserving a split into two separate titles for better pacing—I still regard the God of War series as nostalgic comfort food. Rebooting Ragnarök after some time away reminded me how much I cherish these games and this iteration of one gaming’s most polarizing characters. My previous enjoyment with 2018’s God of War, especially its successful PC port last year—which didn’t present similar technical issues—only amplifies this disappointment.
Sony’s Ambitious Expansion Strategy
Sony has been actively pursuing an expansive strategy for its franchises beyond traditional consoles—a move exemplified by their recent PC ports. The company aims to transform its games into global brands while also venturing into film and television adaptations across various platforms. This ambition includes acquiring studios like Neon Kai for mobile development and Nixxes Software for enhancing their presence on non-console platforms.
While Sony has firmly established itself in creating high-quality prestige titles on consoles, its track record outside this realm remains inconsistent at best. As one of their most celebrated releases in recent years, seeing God of War: Ragnarök arrive on PC without delivering an optimal experience feels like a missed opportunity.
Update on Performance Issues
As per an update released on September 23rd at 4:55 p.m., Sony acknowledged ongoing investigations regarding reports related to framerate drops and VRAM leaks but stated they had yet to replicate these scenarios effectively. They assured players they are committed to ensuring everyone enjoys their gaming experience fully.
while there is undeniable charm in revisiting Kratos’ world through different lenses or platforms, it’s crucial that such transitions maintain the quality fans expect from beloved franchises.
